When people see my paintings, I assume they see them as “landscape paintings” and “representational” in some way. They might consider that my paintings are a continuation of great landscape traditions. I am guessing that a fair number of viewers, those with more than a passing interest in formal and expressive aspects of composition or in material aesthetics, will look carefully at how each painting is structured – the application and interplay of color, the apparent arrangement of masses and forces in the composition, etc. (However, I believe that the viewer’s response to an art work is not dependent on a mechanical analysis of abstract compositional features. In fact, I think the viewer’s aesthetic response might even be impaired by such analysis -- but that is a tangent that I haven’t really resolved in my own mind.)
Qualities of color and pattern as well as the physical aspects of paint provide enormously satisfying opportunities for exploration while I am painting. However, they are mainly vocabulary and tools I use to evoke the sensuous qualities of light and atmosphere in the landscape, and to articulate the sense of place I am trying to come to grips with.
If you were to ask me “What important feature of much of your painting are viewers most likely to overlook?”, I would answer “That I paint backgrounds.” I usually avoid including objects in my compositions that might be identified as dominant subjects. For example, when a person is included in a composition, I feel that the painting becomes about that person. Everything else is subordinated to the service of that person’s story – everything is “background” for that person’s story. Hence, I seldom include people in my paintings. The same is generally true of animals or cars.
I read an article by Marshall McLuhan (the media and culture philosopher who contended that the means of communication had more impact than the information itself) in which he expressed the view that a primary purpose of art was to make visible that which has become invisible. That was thirty five years ago or so. I was young, encountering lots of new and interesting ideas, full of myself, and I almost overlooked McLuhan’s observation. But that simple idea got stuck in my head and, in time and after a fashion, became a primary principle guiding my work. I came to “landscape” because it suggested an almost universal set of environmental experiences that we share; it already had a well developed set of conventions that were generally understood within our culture; and so much of it was overlooked or relegated to the status of “background” suitable for framing important events. It was generally just invisible. Much of my work has been an exploration leading to art where background is the subject. I prefer to think of my pieces as including only one person, the viewer who is encountering the painting. I expect each of my paintings to engage the viewer by reawakening and clarifying environmental experiences that are often overlooked. I find my subjects in shadows on highways, light filtering through a windbreak, demarcations separating public and private property, early morning stillness, patterns that contrast natural with human cultivation, … I have an intuition that often amounts to little more than a few references ideas and some vague essences that I am trying to clarify as I begin each painting. In some ways, a finished piece is a record of my attempt to make visible an essence that seemed just beyond reach when I began. The process of creating one painting may lay the ground work for a series of painting ideas that seem worthy of further consideration that I can test against that beacon suggested by McLuhan, make visible that which has become invisible.
