Statement:

Painting, for me, is instinctual and spontaneous.  I approach each blank canvas wondering where the work will take me.  Each mark informs the next and every color influences the next.  As a painting develops it becomes a conversation between hand, paint and canvas.

Even though I’m not interested in trying to portray a realistic image, I think my paintings often reflect, in some respect, observations of what happens outside the windows of my studio.  I’m a keen observer of light and shadow, closeup color analysis of plant material, and spontaneous patterns created by wind and time of day.   I always have music going in the studio and the tempo affects both brush marks, mood and palette of the painting.

When I can find the space in my mind that shuts out the business of the outside world and my hand, the paint and the canvas are in sync, I’m a happy painter. I love it when paintings happen without expectation and seemingly without my input.
